Suan Chitralada Experimental Rice Mill

On His Majesty the King’s concern about the poverty
of the farmers, His Majesty gave the advice that farmers
should form themselves into groups along the lines of a
cooperative, with their own barns, and carry out rice
milling activities themselves. Therefore, the Royal
Chitralada Projects have been carrying out rice storage
and milling studies and demonstrations since 1971.

There are demonstrations of storing rice in wooden silos and New-Zealand
metal silos. Paddy that is bought from the farmers is fragrant jasmine rice.

In the milling process, firstly the husk is removed. Brown rice without husk
is sometimes called healthy rice because it contains lots of nutrition, however
due to its hardness it is not very popular. Brown rice that has been milled
once is called semi-brown rice. For the white rice, it will be polished 3 times.
It is then soft but contains less nutrients.
