EXCERPTS
FROM THE ROYAL SPEECH
by
H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn
Chairman of the Sai Jai Thai Foundation
Television Broadcast on "Sai Jai Thai Day " 2 April 1976
"......While soldiers, policemen, government officials, volunteers,
rangers and construction workers in insurgent areas have one by one devoted
their lives, flesh and blood to protect the sovereignty of Thailand, constituting
a yearly death toll of hundreds of lives, they have to be alert to danger,
and suffering, and have no time to rest, some of them end up being handicapped.
Despite the hardship and danger, they will never stop fighting as they
all realize that it is essential to safeguard the country. Her Majesty
the Queen once remarked that those who are fighting to protect the country
are fulfilling their duties as Thai people. The rest of us, Thai, also
have this same duty. Meanwhile each and every Thai citizen is indebted
to these guardians of the nation, for a nation is compared to a big family
in which her people should live in unity with each other, having mutual
love and compassion. Therefore, while our countrymen are bravely defending
the country, suffering, being wounded or killed, the rest of us should
express our sympathy and help to show our gratitude to them."
"On the occasion of my birthday on 2 April 1975, instead of offerring
merit making as usual, I collected the money to help soldiers, policemen
and volunteers who are wounded or killed or handicapped in battle. Her
Majesty the Queen has allowed this money together with her personal funds
to be used for the setting up of the Sai Jai Thai Foundation, under my
chairmanship and royal patronage. Every 2nd of April is regarded as Sai
Jai Thai Day. I would like to invite all Thai people to join us by donating
money to the Foundation."
